This chapter takes a closer look at the history and architecture of the sanatoria built in Istanbul during the early to mid-20th century as part of the fight against tuberculosis. Written to mark the centennial of the Turkish Republic, it traces how these facilities evolved over time — from repurposed Ottoman-era buildings to purpose-designed modern structures — and maps out the different typologies that emerged. Along the way, it explores how shifting political and social priorities shaped their design and function. The chapter also tracks what became of these buildings once tuberculosis ceased to be a major threat, documenting stories of preservation, adaptation, and loss. In doing so, it reflects on how Istanbul’s sanatoria continue to offer important lessons about architecture, public health, and collective memory today.
