This chapter looks at how electric lighting entered everyday homes in early republican Turkey and what it meant for ideas of modern life. While electricity quickly became a powerful symbol of national progress in public spaces during the 1930s, its arrival in domestic settings was slower and more uncertain. Higher costs, safety concerns, and unfamiliarity with the technology created hesitation among households. Through examples from advertisements, magazines, architectural journals, and literature, the chapter traces how electric lighting was promoted as a key feature of the "modern home." It suggests that the spread of electric light was not just about convenience or technology, but also about reshaping daily life and imagining a new kind of national identity.
